Shenmue fans, you know the drill: a little more waiting. Publisher ININ Games has confirmed that Shenmue III Enhanced, the upgraded version of Ys Net’s 2019 sequel, is moving out of its late-2026 window and into early 2027. The news came in an ININ newsletter, first spotted by fansite Shenmue Dojo.

”We’re well aware that you’re eagerly awaiting the chance to see Ryo shine like never before, for the first time on several modern consoles,” the statement reads. “Development is taking time to get everything right, and we’re making great progress while finalizing the last details. We’ll have more details to share with you soon and are looking forward to this release in early 2027!”

There’s no exact date yet, and Push Square notes the delay had looked likely for a while as 2026 wore on.

What’s in the Enhanced edition: It’s coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2, which makes it Shenmue III’s first appearance on Xbox. According to Twisted Voxel’s rundown, the upgrades include:

  • Better visuals and frame rates, plus shorter loading times
  • Busier towns and villages with more NPCs
  • An optional classic camera inspired by Shenmue I and II
  • Optional tweaks to stamina, healing before fights and money progression
  • Refined controls and other quality-of-life fixes

The original Shenmue III launched on PS4 and PC on November 19, 2019, picking up Ryo Hazuki’s hunt for his father’s killer after Shenmue II.

PPR take: Slipping out of the GTA VI blast radius was probably smart, and “early 2027” sounds close. After an 18-year wait for Shenmue III itself, a few more months for the polished version is nothing.
