Borderlands is now a 100-million-seller. Gearbox announced on November 2 that the franchise has “officially crossed 100 million units sold,” in a message to the community on the Borderlands site and a post on X. The number covers the whole series going back to the first game in 2009, not Borderlands 4 on its own. Gearbox and 2K haven’t shared a separate sales figure for Borderlands 4, as Gadgets 360 points out.

A prediction that came true

This one was called in advance. Insider Gaming interviewed Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford at Gamescom in August 2025, just before Borderlands 4 launched, and he said the franchise would “break 100 million units with this launch, easy.” Borderlands 4 came out on September 12, 2025, so the series got there a little over a year later. Insider Gaming says that puts Borderlands roughly level with Gran Turismo and Tomb Raider on the list of best-selling game franchises.

What’s next for Borderlands 4

Gearbox says it has wrapped up the Year 1 roadmap. That year brought two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs, two new Vault Hunters and a number of new features and activities. The studio says the team is “cooking hard on more Borderlands 4 content for next year,” and that Weekly Activity refreshes and Community Challenges will carry on in the meantime.

It isn’t announcing anything specific yet. Gearbox says it’s “taking a bigger look at the franchise as a whole” and is asking players which characters they want more time with and which stories “deserve a payoff.” It points fans to social media and the Gearbox Devcast for feedback, but adds that “big plans take time” and it will say more when it’s ready.

The same message also announced this year’s run of The Hunt, the community fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, starting November 6. 2K Foundations and Gearbox will match every dollar donated up to last year’s record of $118,995.80, which could push the total past $230,000.

PPR take: 100 million is a huge number for a series that, by Pitchford’s own telling, a lot of people expected to flop back in 2009. For anyone still playing Borderlands 4, the useful part is the confirmation that year two is real, even without dates or details. I like that Gearbox is openly asking which characters and stories players want next. That only means something if the feedback actually shows up in the game, so I’ll wait to see what they announce. In the meantime, if you’re jumping back in, The Hunt starts November 6 and the donation match makes it a good week to take part.
