Jagex cancels RuneScape Reignited after player backlash

Less than two weeks after RuneFest 2026 put RuneScape Reignited on the calendar for December 2, Jagex has killed the project.

In a October 15 blog and video from Mod Ryan (associate creative director Ryan Philpott), the studio says player feedback made the call clear: “It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it.”

Why it died: Reignited was pitched as a fresh-start experience with its own character track, economy, and hiscores. A chunk of the existing community pushed back hard over a split world, limits on how new and veteran characters would interact, and extra membership friction. Jagex had already apologized and floated heavy revisions earlier in the week; after another round of feedback, it cancelled instead of shipping a half-fixed reset.

Ryan frames the choice against Jagex’s history: “the last time we didn’t listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that.” The goal is still growth with returners and new players — “but never at the expense of our existing community.”

What still happens December 2:

  • The Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey still launch
  • A 10-day free members trial runs December 2–12 for new characters, or any character that has not been in membership since June 2, 2026
  • Old School RuneScape members worlds are not included in that trial
  • Jagex says the 2027 roadmap (combat and skilling, a grandmaster quest, an Agility rework, Road to Restoration) remains on track

Plugins are also still due Monday, October 19, with more detail promised then.

PPR take: Scrapping a RuneFest headline this fast is messy PR, but it’s better than forcing a community split. Watching whether December’s onboarding push actually brings people back — without a separate Reignited silo — is the real test.
