Starfield mod spotlight: Holsters SFSE finally puts your guns on your back and hip

This week’s Starfield mod spotlight fixes something that’s bugged players since launch: your guns vanish the moment you put them away. Holsters SFSE (Beta) by modder ScarecroOw makes holstered weapons visible. Pistols sit on your right thigh and rifles go on your back. It went up on Nexus Mods on October 22, has about 40 endorsements already, and is one of the most-endorsed new Starfield mods of the past week.
What it does. In the base game, a holstered weapon simply disappears. This mod shows a copy of it on your character instead, and it does that without using an armor body slot or replacing any clothing, spacesuit or backpack meshes, so it should play nicely with outfit mods. According to the mod page, it includes:
- A visible pistol on the right thigh and a visible rifle on the back.
- An experimental mode that keeps your favorite pistol and rifle visible together, so the gun you’re not using stays on your body.
- Automatic rifle placement on your boostpack’s own holster point when the boostpack is visible.
- Holstered weapons on loaded humanoid NPCs too, including your followers.
- An in-game adjustment window (press End) to move, rotate and scale each weapon while you look at your character, with a Save Position button.
How to use it. Put a pistol and a rifle in your favorites. The mod uses the first favorite slot holding a pistol and the first holding a rifle. Equip each one, draw it, holster it and wait at least three seconds so the mod can capture it. You have to repeat that after loading a save or changing favorites. ScarecroOw also warns, in capital letters, to turn off the blur feature in SFSE Menu Framework, or your screen will be blurred while you adjust the weapons.
It’s a beta, and the author says so. ScarecroOw describes it as “a work in progress. It works, but it doesn’t work consistently yet.” Known issues include a pistol or rifle sometimes disappearing when you switch weapons, attachments detaching from the displayed copy, unreliable matching between modded versions of the same gun, and outfits that need position tweaks. There are no holster shells or straps yet, just the weapons. The changelog already lists a 1.2 update with fixes for weapons not showing up when you switch quickly, melee weapon support, and options to turn off individual weapon displays. The mod is tagged as containing AI-generated content, and the author lists Codex among the tools used. The source code is public on GitHub.
Platforms, price and requirements:
- Platform: PC only. It’s a Starfield Script Extender (SFSE) plugin, so it won’t work on Xbox, and it isn’t on Bethesda’s Creations store.
- Price: free on Nexus Mods.
- Built for: Starfield 1.16.244.0 and SFSE 0.2.21.
- Required: SFSE, Address Library for SFSE Plugins, StarPatcher, and SFSE Menu Framework (for the position menu). Enable
StarfieldHolsters.esmand launch the game through SFSE. Close the game before updating; your saved positions carry over.
PPR take: Visible holsters are one of those small touches that make a character feel real, and Starfield’s disappearing guns have always looked odd next to its detailed spacesuits. Holsters SFSE is rough around the edges right now, so go in expecting to re-holster a weapon or nudge a position now and then. But it already covers the player, followers and NPCs without breaking outfits, and with a 1.2 update already listed, it’s worth keeping an eye on if you play on PC.
