Bungie lays out Destiny 2's unvaulting plan: Red War, Forsaken and the Menagerie are coming back, but not before 2028

Destiny 2’s vaulted campaigns are coming back, but you’ll be waiting a while. Bungie has put a rough timeline on the unvaulting project it announced in September, and it points to early 2028 at the soonest.
The details are in the first Bungie Community Update, a Q&A between Bungie’s dmg04 and head of product Josh Deane. Bungie says the update won’t be a weekly series like the old This Week in Destiny posts, just an occasional space for Destiny, Marathon and studio news.
What’s coming back first
The first pass of unvaulting, which Bungie says will be available to all players, focuses on making the campaign slate whole again:
- The Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken campaigns
- Strikes from those releases
- Raids and raid lairs from those releases
- The Menagerie, with reprised rewards
”Menagerie holds a special place in our hearts, and we’ve seen years of community requests for a return,” Deane wrote, as quoted by Output Lag.
Bungie lists free-roam destinations (public events, Lost Sectors, Escalation Protocol), seasonal activities from the Sundial through The Coil, raid and raid lair weapon updates, and PvP maps as stretch goals that could come at launch or after. It says an updated New Light experience, seasonal story missions, the Kell’s Grave Gambit map and seasonal hubs like the Eliksni Quarter currently have no path back, for technical or strategic reasons.
The timeline
According to FullCleared, Bungie got an initial greenlight in June to scope the work and find a porting partner, then fully greenlit the project in September. It’s now in a pre-production, proof-of-work stage expected to run until roughly January or February 2027. After that, Deane says full production should take about 12 months. Bungie hasn’t named its partner studio or given a release date.
What else Bungie mentioned
Deane named three “anchors” for Destiny’s future: a Destiny 2 “Celebration” that goes beyond the Monument of Triumph update, a Destiny “Legacy” project about bringing “the whole experience” to where people play today, and a third item listed only as redacted. Bungie says it will check in on the first two in February. Deane also said not to expect a Destiny announcement at The Game Awards this year.
PPR take: Getting Forsaken and the Menagerie back is a big deal for anyone who missed them, but 2028 is a long time to wait. At least Bungie’s being upfront about it.
