The Kilrathi are back on Steam. Electronic Arts released 25 classic games today, November 5, 2026, and for the first time the Wing Commander lineup is for sale on Steam. The same titles are also on GOG and the EA App. Seven of them got real anniversary restorations with quality-of-life work and higher-resolution full-motion video pulled from master tapes. The other 18 are faithful ports, including Privateer, Academy, Armada, Strike Commander, Theme Hospital, both Crusader games, and a big pile of Ultima titles.

The restored anniversary editions

EA’s restored set is the headline. According to the EA classics launch post, these seven are out with modern updates:

  • Wing Commander: 35th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi: 35th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander Prophecy: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Privateer 2: The Darkening: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition

Wing Commander CIC confirms the FMV games got video updates (yes, that includes Privateer 2), and that community-driven software updates improve quality of life across the lineup. If you already owned the digital Wing Commander games on GOG or the EA App, EA says your copies upgrade to the Anniversary Editions for free. Steam and GOG also have special pricing from November 5 through 19.

Wing Commander III is the showcase

The story that kicked this off is WC3. About three weeks ago at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, EA Senior Producer Jim Vessella talked about finding a cache of source tapes with the raw Wing Commander III footage. Today’s WC3 30th Anniversary page and the classics post fill in what that became. EA says source master tapes discovered in its physical media vault in 2022 were digitized and re-edited frame by frame, restoring more than 1,000 FMV scenes across Wing Commander III and IV. Optional upscaled FMVs are in, the community Enhancement Patch is bundled (60 FPS gameplay, better controller and joystick support, widescreen cockpit options, and more), and for WC3 the coveted Kilrathi Saga version is integrated as a digital release for the first time. Prophecy and Privateer 2 got their own master-tape FMV restorations and patch bundles too. WC1 and WC2 lean on Kilrathi Saga integration plus community Wcdx and WCAT patches.

PPR take: Look…this one hits different if you’ve been around Chris Roberts’ games for a while. Wing Commander is where Origin Systems taught a lot of us that a cockpit, a story, and a war you actually cared about could feel like a movie you were flying. Chris built that universe, then he went and started Cloud Imperium. So yeah, as someone who’s been in the ‘verse a long time, seeing WC3’s original FMV tapes dug out of an EA vault and put back into a game that just works on a modern PC is the kind of news that makes me grin. The free upgrade for existing GOG and EA App owners is the right call, and Steam finally getting the series means a whole new crowd can find out why we still talk about Blair and the Kilrathi. I’m grabbing WC3 tonight. Confed forever. 🚀
