Faye’s going to need a little more time. Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey to May 20, 2027. The studio posted the news on X at noon ET today in a short statement.

The game had been set for February 16, 2027 on PlayStation 5. That’s the date Santa Monica’s Communications Director gave in the pre-order post on PlayStation.Blog back in September, so the delay is a little over three months.

What the studio said

The statement thanks fans for the excitement “since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June” and for following “Faye’s journey through the Everywhen.” Then it gets to the point:

“With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027. We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.”

It closes by thanking players for their patience and promising “more updates soon.” That’s all it says. It gives no specific reason beyond polish. PlayStation has only announced the game for PS5.

A quick refresher

God of War Laufey was the closer of the June 2 State of Play. In Santa Monica’s first look, the studio calls it the next mainline entry in the series. You play as Laufey, better known as Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. She wakes up after her own funeral in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, where gods from across mythology fight for power. Deborah Ann Woll is back as Faye, with Jack Quaid as Phranque, a cosmic cube, and Perlina Lau as Rue.

In September, Sony detailed a pre-order bonus, a Digital Deluxe Edition and Faye’s Serpent Bow. In October, it added a $149.99 Collector Box that was due to ship on the old February date. Today’s statement doesn’t mention pre-orders or the Collector Box. GameSpot and The Verge both have the full statement.

PPR take: I’m not upset about this one at all. Three months is nothing in the grand scheme of things, and I’d much rather Santa Monica take the time than ship something that needs six patches to feel right. This studio has earned some trust with me. 2018’s God of War and Ragnarök were both worth every minute of the wait. Faye is also a big swing. She’s a brand-new lead with a totally different feel than Kratos, so getting that combat RIGHT matters more than hitting a February date. The one thing I’d like to see soon is a clear word on what happens with Collector Box orders, since that was tied to the old date. Otherwise, May 20 it is…I’ll be ready.
