Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is out now on Switch 2, back on Wuhu Island with a 79 Metacritic

Wuhu Island is back. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is out today, October 22, exclusively on Switch 2, at $49.99 (£41.99), per Nintendo Life. It has 12 motion-controlled sports, with classics like tennis, bowling and boxing next to new ones like skateboarding and thumb wrestling, plus local play for up to four and online play.
The reviews are good, not great. It’s sitting around 79 on Metacritic and 79 on OpenCritic, with 79% of critics recommending it. A few scores:
- GameSpot: 9/10
- Nintendo Life: 9/10, calling it “the Nintendo Sports series at its best” in its review
- Shacknews and TheSixthAxis: 8/10
- Eurogamer and VGC: 4/5
- IGN: 7/10, saying the quality of the sports “varies drastically”
What critics liked: As Polygon’s roundup notes, the 79 is a big jump over 2022’s Nintendo Switch Sports (72) and right in line with Wii Sports Resort (80). Skateboarding is the standout. You lay a Joy-Con 2 flat in mouse mode, pull back to build speed, flick to jump and tilt to steer, and Eurogamer’s Matt Wales said he loved it. Reviewers also liked the single-player Island Crown mode, where you climb a ladder of opponents, and the better character customization. The main complaints are that some sports are shallow once you get good, and online play has a few small annoyances.
PPR take: This is the party game Switch 2 owners were waiting for over the holidays. If you have people over, it’s an easy pick. If you mostly play alone, Island Crown helps, but this is still a game you’ll enjoy most with a couch full of friends.
