Saros gets its free Zenith update today with New Game+, an Overlord boss rush and new accessibility options

Saros just got a lot bigger, for free. Housemarque’s Zenith update is out today, October 19, for every Saros owner at no extra charge, according to design lead Abebe Tinari on the PlayStation Blog. The studio says it had two goals: give veterans more reasons to go back to Carcosa, and make the game easier for newcomers to get into.
Easier to pick up. A new Slow Game Speed setting slows the whole game down without removing any of the bullets, so you get more time to read attacks. You can choose how slow it goes and whether it switches on automatically in combat. There’s also an Auto-fire option that shoots when you’re aiming at an enemy, though perfect reloads still need a well-timed press. Zenith also adds 10 new Protection Modifiers to make runs more forgiving.
Harder if you want it. On the other side, there are 10 new Trial Modifiers, like “Hostile Regeneration,” where big enemies recover from stuns unless you finish them with a melee strike. Those feed into the new New Game+ mode, Eclipse Layers, which you unlock after beating the game. Each layer is a tougher version of the game that makes you pick a set of Trials before you start, out of 25 in total. Take on more of them and Arjun wears a crown that grows bigger and more golden. The crown also reveals 12 new “Visions,” murals left by an ancient king that hold extra story text.
Overlord Rush. The new boss rush mode puts you in a training simulation where you race through Carcosa’s Overlords for a spot on the leaderboard. The “Incursion” and “Ascension” sets have three bosses each and take about 10 minutes. “Totality” runs all eight Overlords back to back. You can filter the global leaderboard by main weapon, and online play needs an internet connection and a PlayStation account.
PPR take: Free updates this meaty are rare for a single-player game. Slow Game Speed is a smart fix, because it opens the game up to more people without watering down the bullet storms that make Housemarque games so much fun.
