Thirty years of Lara. Tomb Raider’s 30th anniversary week is here (the original hit UK shelves in late October 1996), and PlayStation marked it with new artwork on X and a PlayStation.Blog deep dive on how Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis rebuilds her. Legacy of Atlantis is the Unreal Engine 5 reimagining of the 1996 original, made by Crystal Dynamics with Flying Wild Hog and published by Amazon Game Studios. It launches February 12, 2027, and pre-orders are live.

What’s new under the hood, according to Crystal Dynamics’ Brendon Bengston and Flying Wild Hog’s Aleksandra Skiba:

  • Hair: the old solid polygon ponytail is gone. The team now uses hair cards, layered strips of semi-transparent texture, so the bangs, ponytail and braid each move on their own.
  • Skin and faces: subsurface scattering so skin doesn’t look like plastic, plus custom blend shapes so Lara gets real forehead lines when she squints, smiles or frowns.
  • Clothes: the team 3D printed Lara’s body at real scale, dressed the mannequin in real clothing and scanned it. For one outfit they hired a tailor to make it for real first.

Which Lara is this? Narrative director John Stafford says the plan is to merge the mythic, grounded and over-the-top versions of every era into one Lara. Her intelligence and fearlessness stay. She gets more emotional depth, and she keeps some of the Survivor trilogy’s sense that danger has consequences. As Stafford puts it, “Lara must always feel like someone who needs to know what’s behind the next door.”

The anniversary push started earlier in the week, too. HappyGamer rounded up Xbox Wire’s interview with Crystal Dynamics’ Meagan Marie, and Tomb Raider Chronicles has the official anniversary illustration and a Derby Museums exhibit on Core Design, the six-person core team that made the first game.

PPR take: Remaking the 1996 game is a safer bet than it sounds. Anniversary pulled it off in 2007, and this time the team has a much bigger toolbox. The real question is whether it keeps the lonely, quiet feel of the original tombs instead of filling them with cutscenes. February is not far off.
